Almost every boat on the water today with a permanent mounted fuel tank shares a dirty design flaw - a direct venting fuel system. To handle the natural expansion that occurs in a fuel tank, a small hose is connected to an exterior fitting that allows vapors to escape to the outside air. All too often, however, gas or diesel ends up going over the side too, polluting our precious waterways. This unfortunate event usually takes place at the fuel dock, leading to the all too common sheen floating around just about every marina.
